Anne Czichowsky (born in 1981 in Schaffhausen, Switzerland) studied jazz vocals at the Universities of Music in Stuttgart and Graz. Since then, she has established herself as a soloist and bandleader in various jazz projects and has won several international jazz awards. With her passion for scat improv and straight ahead jazz, she can truly be considered as a “keeper of the flame”. Her vocalese lyrics on instrumental solos attract international attention. She has so far performed in Italy, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Austria, Turkey (“Nardis Jazzclub Istanbul”), Africa (Mozambique, Zimbabwe & South Africa), Lithuania, Romania (“Europafest Bucharest”), Finland (“Rajaton Jazzfestival”), South East Asia (Laos, Malaysia, Vietnam & Cambodia), Mongolia and all over Germany.

 

She collaborated with Sheila Jordan, Kristin Korb, Darmon Meader, Önder Focan Trio, Gianluca Esposito, Bayan Mongol Bigband, Martin Zenker, Oliver Mtukudzi, Willi Johanns, Südpool Ensemble with Bernd Konrad, Günther Lenz, Herbert Joos and many others. Currently, Anne is the bandleader of four projects, performing regularly in Germany and abroad: “Anne Czichowsky Quintet”, “Quodlibetting” with Swiss-based singer Marianne Racine, “Round #2” with Swiss guitarist Michael Bucher and her female quintet "Lines for Ladies".

In 2010, Anne was awarded the grand prize of  “Volksbank Hochrhein Foundation”  for  her

outstanding achievements in music. In 2011, she received the "Landesjazzpreis Baden-Württemberg", which is one of the most prestigious jazz awards in Germany. For the first time in over 35 years this award was given to a singer. 


Anne is a popular and dedicated jazz vocal teacher, currently coaching the vocal ensemble of the Bavarian Youth Jazz Big Band (LJJB) and regularly working as a guest teacher at the GMUB study programme in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, a collaboration of the Goethe Institute and the Mongolian State Conservatory. Apart from many workshop and masterclass activities, she‘s a docent for jazz vocals at the University of Music HMT Munich and the BFSM Krumbach music college, and she also holds a lectureship position at Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK).

 

In 2014, she released her third album "The truth and the abstract blues" as a leader with the „Anne Czichowsky Quintet“ on Double Moon Records. The musicians playing in this quintet are Martin Wiedmann (guitar), Thilo Wagner (piano), Axel Kühn (bass) and Matthias Daneck (drums). Also in 2014, a new project came to life: Together with the German jazz singer Sabine Kühlich, Anne founded the project “Lines for Ladies”, a whole female band. Lines for Ladies had its debut at the Int. Festival „Women in Jazz“ in Halle (Germany) and released a live album in 2016 featuring jazz legend Sheila Jordan and US-bassist & singer Kristin Korb.

Anne Czichowsky (geboren 1981 in Schaffhausen/CH) studierte Jazzgesang an den Musikhochschulen in Stuttgart und Graz (A). Sie machte sich einen Namen durch internationale wie nationale Preise und löste für ihre Konzerte und ersten CDs ein großes und durchweg begeistertes Echo aus. Als bisher einzige Sängerin wurde sie 2011 mit dem Landesjazzpreis Baden-Württemberg ausgezeichnet. Sie zählt mit der inzwischen in Deutschland eher selten zu findenden Vorliebe für Bebop und Scatgesang zu einer der „keepers of the flame“. Internationale Beachtung finden auch ihre Betextungen einflussreicher Instrumentalstücke und –soli dieser Epoche.

 

Als Jazzsängerin gastierte sie bislang auf Bühnen in Italien, der Schweiz, Luxembourg, Österreich, der Türkei („Nardis Jazzclub Istanbul“), Afrika (Mosambik, Simbabwe & Südafrika), Litauen, Rumänien, Finnland („Storyville Jazzclub Helsinki“, „Rajaton Jazzfestival“), der Mongolei und ganz Deutschland. Sie spielte u.a. mit Sheila Jordan, Kristin Korb, Darmon Meader, Önder Focan Trio, Gianluca Esposito, Oliver Mtukudzi, Willi Johanns, dem Südpool Ensemble mit u.a. Bernd Konrad, Günther Lenz, Herbert Joos uvm. Aktuell ist Anne Bandleaderin von vier eigenen Projekten, mit welchen sie regelmäßig tourt: “Anne Czichowsky Quintet”, “Quodlibetting” mit der Zürcher Sängerin Marianne Racine, “Round #2” mit dem Zürcher Gitarristen Michael Bucher und ihr Frauenquintett "Lines for Ladies" mit Co-Leaderin Sabine Kühlich.

 

Mit ihrem ersten Quintett „Jazzpartout“ gewann sie 2008 die „Bucharest Int. Jazz Competition“, das Debütalbum „Rise“ erschien 2009 auf dem Label Neuklang. 2008 gewann Anne Czichowsky den Int. Jazz Singers Contest „Lady Summertime“ in Finnland und erhielt zudem den Publikums-Preis „favourite singer of the audience“. 2009 belegte sie den 2.Platz im „Int. Jazz Voices Contest“ in Litauen. 2010 wurde ihr als erster Jazzmusikerin der „Große Musikpreis“ der Volksbank Hochrhein Stiftung für ihre außerordentlichen musikalischen Leistungen verliehen. Ebenfalls 2010 belegte sie den 2.Platz im „12th Int. Jazz Soloist Competition“ in Monaco.

2011 wurde Anne Czichowsky der Jazzpreis des Landes Baden-Württemberg verliehen, einer der höchstdotierten deutschen Jazzpreise. Erstmals ging dieser Preis an eine Jazzsängerin.

 

Mit dem Anne Czichowsky Quintett veröffentlichte sie 2011 das Album „Play on words“ (Neuklang), 2014 folgte das zweite Album namens „The truth and the abstract blues“ auf Double Moon Records. In diesem Quintett spielen Thilo Wagner (p), Martin Wiedmann (git), Axel Kühn (b) und Matthias Daneck (dr). Ebenfalls 2014 gründete Anne zusammen mit der international renommierten Sängerin Sabine Kühlich die Formation „Lines for Ladies“. Lines for Ladies trat 2014 beim Int. Festival „Women in Jazz“ in Halle auf und tourte im Herbst 2014 mit Jazzlegende Sheila Jordan und der Kontrabassistin und Sängerin Kristin Korb. Im Mai 2016 erschien das Live-Album von Lines for Ladies.

 

Anne Czichowsky ist auch als Pädagogin sehr gefragt und betreut unter anderem das Vokalensemble des Landesjugendjazzorchesters Bayern. Als Gastdozentin war sie regelmäßig am Jazzstudiengang des GMUB (Goethe Musiklabor Ulan Bator) in der Mongolei tätig. Zusammen mit den "New York Voices" und der Bay. Musikakademie veranstaltet sie das Vocal Jazz Camp in Marktoberdorf. Nebst diversen Workshops und Masterclasses unterrichtet sie aktuell als Dozentin für Jazzgesang an der HMT München und an der BfsM Krumbach, sowie im Lehrauftrag an der ZHdK Zürich.
